Have you actually understood, and realized, the truth
of impermanence? Have you so integrated it with your every thought, breath, and
movement that your life has been transformed?
Ask yourself these two questions:
1.Do
I remember at every moment that I am dying, and everyone and everything else
is, and so treat all beings at all times with compassion?
2. Has my understanding of death and impermanence become
so keen and so urgent that I am devoting every second to the pursuit of
enlightenment?
If you can answer “yes” to both of
these, then you have really understood impermanence.
p.27 - Tibetan Book of Living and Dying - Sogyal Rinpoche
It is an excellent book to read and one I have had with me since 1999. Presently reading from front to back with one person in mind who is entering the later stages of this life and in this focused prayer I am again learning what is most important in life. This above reference speaks to me clearly and keeps the road clear ahead for that transformational time as one life ends and another begins.
For anyone dealing with the death of a loved one, this book serves in many ways to prepare them as well as give the ones "left behind" the strength for themselves but also to closely relate to the stages of death and dying and tools to help the process.
