A month has gone by since the beginning of the Occupy Movement and on this little island, inside a little studio wrapped in trees, paradise is all around. The birds never seem to stop chirping, the owl continues into the night and the moon shines overhead - seemingly ever present even in the phase of black moon. Nothing really worries one much here if they tune into the present moment as the reality is here. But, if we are to look outside, there is strife all around. Tibetan nuns sacrificing their lives in flames, Greece rioting, natural disasters, etc etc. The emotions as a human being are complex and we tend to become engulfed in the negative forces. Through spiritual practice we can take the time to look within and find peace there that interconnects us all - when this interconnection is seen we can feel the pain of the world as well as its joys.
In the past weeks the "Occupy Movement" has consumed my personal experience and the desire to dig for answers, seeing injustices at every corner and before long feeling that the insurmountable discrepencies seem to be all too much for humankind. The negative effects of this being the pull from a peaceful space into the disruption of various disservices to the world at large. Sitting in deep reflection today I was able to slowly process the experience and the emotions behind what had awoken in me as a deep sense of pain for the world. In this pain I had felt that there would be no justice; but came to the understanding that it is in each of our personal powers to change things.
If you are reading this you likely have a roof over your head nightly and at least one meal a day - God bless you - so, what to do now? Make conscious decisions on how you live your life. Much of the injustices are from greed and money, but without the request and demand for consumption there would not be the marketplace for this mass accumulation to take place. We need to be aware that the ripple effects of our purchases/consumption is global and that EACH CHOICE we make to spend our money or demand a certain product/service is setting the stage for that demand to be met; and in that demand certain activities will have to take place. These activities often develop into the pursuit for cost cutting measures and put many peoples lives at risk; this pursuit will likely not stop until there is a deeper sense of morality (brought about by deep interspection) as it has become a systemic aspect of the business psyche BUT we can EACH make CONSCIOUS choices on our consumption.
HOW? Consume less, demand less, spend less, require less, be simple, meditate, find peace within, carry that peace and well-wishing to all that you see, serve others, care for those in need, do selfless service, volunteer, donate to local organizations, buy locally, ASK yourself "DO I REALLY NEED THIS?", relieve yourself of debt such as credit cards, and just be still in the peace of your own awareness.
We need to cultivate peace within because the negative energies are all consuming and if we get pulled into the force we run the risk of our bright internal light flickering in the quagmire of too much hatred, confusion and feeling of powerlessness.
It is important to remain still, powerful, loving, caring and above all simple.
It occured to me in the depth of my own stillness that my contribution to this occupy movement is to slow down, be aware, continue to function in society while keeping a close watch on consumption and its overall impact on this tiny planet we live in. As a "spiritual business" there is hope in knowing that money that is made here contributes to that simple life but also to others around the world in its own little way - we try with what we have to help others - and that is what is important in life. To see its beauty, its grace, to stop and FEEL the air, to envision a world that is true and peaceful and make our own personal efforts to make that happen in our immeditate environment and I promise you the ripple will be global :)
There will always be one study after another one that will point out the problems in the world but it will always be traced back to our own insatiable appetites for consumption and a machine that is wanting to fulfill the demands put on them by that force. If we diminish the requests, in turn the machine will also diminish. We have a responsibility to the globe as individuals that HAVE THE MONEY TO SPEND to EFFECT the ones that don't - unfortunately for the ones without home, food and clothes they have no choice and are subject to the over arching powers but WE (as the consuming population at large) can change for the positive.
If there is a prayer, pray for your own realization so that in that clarity we can collectively shift the world into positive action and bear witness to the joys that life affords and that each and every one of us deserves to have in all its beauty, in all its simplicity, in all its love.
